What the experts say
“Cats use olfactory and pheromonal signals through the use of scent marking by facial and body rubbing. This establishes the boundaries of their core living area in which they feel secure and safe.”
“Applying a synthetic feline facial pheromone analog mimics natural pheromones.”
— AAFP and ISFM Feline Environmental Needs Guidelines, Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery (2013)
Why stressed cats behave differently
Cats feel safest when their surroundings feel familiar. When something changes, like a move, new furniture, a new pet, visitors or loud noises, some cats react with behaviors such as hiding, scratching, overgrooming or marking outside the litter box.
These behaviors are usually a sign of stress, not bad behavior. The same guidelines remind owners that scent marking and inappropriate elimination should never be punished: a calm, predictable environment makes a real difference.
When to see a vet
If your cat suddenly changes its litter habits, strains, or seems unwell, contact your vet. Some changes can have a medical cause.
